Billy escaped but Pat Garrett tracked with intensity fueled by offers of
reward money. On the evening of July 13, 1881 Garrett waited in a darkened
bedroom in Pete Maxwell's house. Billy entered the bedroom,
Garrett fired. Billy's body was buried in the old cemetery near Fort Sumner.
In the early 1900's the County Seat was moved to Carrizozo, and Lincoln's
population fell to 60. Many efforts were made to save the old buildings
and today (1999) Lincoln is the epicenter of a historical preservation area.
