Meanwhile, 8 miles northwest of Orogrande the Oro Iron Co. was established and named their town Ohaysi" (hidden)--the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. named their area Zora. Together, these towns became the iron center of the Jarillas.
In 1905 and 1906, gold seekers, real estate speculators and mining stock promoters flocked to the area. By 1914, there were eight mining companies incorporated in Otero County--some operating mines, and some promoting stock sales in the southwest as well as to the rest of the United States.
From 1905 to 1913, over a million dollars of gold and silver was mined ...and the mining of copper and iron also began. But after World War I gold and silver were mined out--and the copper and iron mines also closed.
