Fraley and Tokay...
Little is know about Fraley.
However, Tokay was founded in 1918 by Barney H. Kinney, an official of
the Carthage mines, who organized the San Antonio Coal Company. Mr. Kinney
named the village he founded Kinney but the postal department
rejected his name and several others. When Mr. Kinney and a postal inspector
were discussing names in the general store, Kinney looked at a box of
Tokay grapes on the counter and asked, "How about Tokay?" Everyone agreed.
The community grew to about 500 residents but in the late 1940's
mining stopped and most of the remaining buildings were moved to
Socorro.
