New Mexico Military

In 1846 the Mexican War brought General Stephen Watts Kearny and his "Army of the West" to Santa Fe. So began American military presence. Over the next 50 years the Army scattered military posts around--some large, some small, many temporary--about 60 total. By 1900, most were abandoned. A few have been preserved, a few are still in use. But most of the military presence story has passed unrecorded.
