Grafton, New Mexico
While Grafton never had its own newspaper, some items were sent in to
the Black Range, the paper published at Chloride. The October 6, 1882
issue included these notes:
"J. W. Nash is up and off, but not an entirely well man yet. B. C.
Williams is off to the Percha country for a short time. Alex Brisacher
has gone to Lake Valley to visit his friend Gillette. A. G. Akin is
expected soon to begin work on the Great Republic mine. Frank Saucier
is hauling hay to Grafton and Fairview for Scales.
"Faye and Robbins have finished assessment work on the 460 and the
Cora mines. Thomas Mahoney is offering his restaurant for sale. The
Yankee Boy, a property belonging to Berry, Smith and others is
producing fine ore from the surface. Business is reported to be excellent
at Grafton this season. The miners are all at work and consequently
they have money, and having money, they spend it freely.
"Grafton has seven children of school age who are growing up in ignorance
and the young men concluding this was too bad have been working up a
school fund with which to employ Miss Nellie Russell as teacher. The
prospect is that Grafton will have a school in running order soon."
