High Rolls and Mountain Park
High Rolls is in Otero County on the slopes of the Sacramento
Mountains, about 11 miles east of Alamogordo. It was originally named
Fresnel probably because it's on the banks of Fresnel Creek
so-named for ash trees (fresno in Spanish) growing on it.
Why the name was changed from Fresnel to High Rolls is unknown now.
About a mile east of High Rolls is Mountain Park founded in
the 1880's by the Button Nelson, Bill Karr, and Jack Tucker families.
Mountain Park takes its name from its location in a pleasant valley
of the Sacramento Mountains. Today (1999), folks living in Mountain Park
share a post office with those living in High Rolls.
