Magdalena Inn
Ranchers, cowboys and miners packed the Magdalena Inn starting in 1917
when it was called the "Hall Hotel" after its builder, Harry Hall. For
Magdalena was second only to Chicago in number of livestock shipped.
Langford Ryan Johnston, author of "Old Magdalena Cow Town", writes, "It
was a magnificent edifice made of brick two stories high with rooms upstairs
and a saloon, large dining room, and lounge downstairs. On the west side,
a porch ran almost the entire length of the building, with a rail about
three feet high on the outside. Big ranchers would rent these rooms
year round and when they or any of their family came to town, they would
have a place to stay ready and waiting for them."
The Inn still stands in Magdalena today (1998), just off US 60.
Business declined at the Hall Hotel when trucks replaced the
railroad and when nearby mines played out. The Hotel finally closed
in the early 1970's. Now (1998), The Inn is listed on the State Register
of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places.
