MIDWAY, NEW MEXICO

Midway, New Mexico, is about 9 miles south of Roswell. The name "Midway" refers to the fact that when the townsite was filed in 1903 it was midway between Roswell and Dexter.

Actually the site was named Cumberland in 1907 by the Rev. Charles W. Lewis, the first settler and president of the Cumberland Development Co. A church was built in 1908 followed by Cumberland College. But World War I ended the college and by the 1930's the town as nearly abandoned.

Now it has been resettled and has taken the name Midway, though the local Cumberland Water Association preserves the old name.
