But by the 1920's there was less of that famous "blossom rock" from which gold nuggets could be shaken. The ore remaining assayed poorly and couldn't be sold to cover costs of refining. Several mines closed entirely, others began operating part-time. When the Little Fanney quit, so did Mogollon. Gunshots ceased to echo from the saloons and over the years, Cooney's camps were slowly, one by one, abandoned.
