Mining in Organ
(Left) The Modoc Mine, in the foothills of the Organ Mountains in 1904, was
near the site of one of the earliest mines in New Mexico, the Stevensen,
discovered in 1849.
Mining activity in New Mexico flourished from 1880 to 1900. Eastern and
foreign capitalists took the bait from the propaganda pouring
from New Mexico. The millions of dollars they furnished bought mining
machines, mills, smelters, concentrators and stamp mills.
Many towns like Organ grew from this massive influx of capital. All New
Mexico benefited in business, agriculture, government and transportation.
