Old Picacho Village
Picacho, called locally "Old Picacho Village", is in Sierra County and is
about six miles northwest of Las Cruces and north of Fairacres, near the
base of Picacho Mountain.
It was settled in 1855 by Candelario Chavez together with people from
Socorro. The original name for the settlement was Picacho de los
Nevarez or "peak of the Nevarez family".
Picacho once was a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route.
Today (1998) the Chruch is at the center of the village, surrounded by
homes, mobile homes and farms. You drive through stands of apple
trees and pecan trees, as well as fields of cotton, onions and chili.
