Exploration for unknown graves

By February 1, 1988, disinterment of known and probable graves was completed and exploration for unknown graves began. Twenty-three additional graves were discovered, one located only about two feet below the surface and another only three feet--neither of these had a coffin. Grave 54-- the last found--was discovered on February 7.

Reinternment in Artesia

On Febrary 15 new grave locations were ready at the Twin Oaks Memorial Park and heavy equipment began digging pits. Boxes were lowered into graves using ropes, and graves backfilled. Then. by June, the original markers, now repaired, and new markers, if required, were in place. Iron fences and slabs of rock from the old cemetery were set.

A memorial was built with this inscription: "This monument is erected in memory of all whose lives ended at Seven Rivers, many as victims of the time and place in which they lived. Only a few were old. All played a part in settling the last frontier. The remains of those who were found in the Seven Rivers Cemetery were moved to this site in 1988."
