Weed, New Mexico

Weed, Otero County, New Mexico, was named Aqua Chiquita by Spanish travelers in 1849. Yeomen farmers and stockmen, mostly of Southern English- American descent, settled in the area between 1882 and 1886 as tides of migration to the Western Frontier ebbed.

Cattlemen such as Frank Garst, A. C.MacDonald, G. W. Lewis and Cap Wilkerson were among the early settlers. In 1885, William H. Weed, a White Oaks merchant, built a store in the area and later added a post office. And Weed came into being.

The Weed School began operating in 1885 and has been holding school every year since. By 1900, the village had a population of over 100, and more than 400 more lived in the surrounding 200 square miles.
