As Bell stooped, his six-shooter came into the Kid's reach. Shucking
off his handcuffs, the Kid leaned across the table and snatched the weapon.
When Bell raised his head, he looked into the muzzle of his own gun.
"Do as I tell you" the Kid ordered. "Don't make a false move. You're dead if
you do. Walk out the door, I'm going to lock you in the armory."
Bell turned and walked out, and the Kid, hampered by his leg irons,
shuffled after him. They came to the head of the back stairs just beyond
which was the armory door. Bell saw that the Kid had tripped and fallen,
perhaps six feet behind him. Bell took a chance--he plunged down the stairs.
In his flying leap, he made the bend...but Billy's bullet struck him
beneath his shoulder blades, cutting through to his heart.
Billy jammed Bell's pistol into his belt, stepped to the door of
the armory and grabbed Deputy Bob Olinger's shotgun leaning against
the wall. From a window in the Courthouse, Billy took aim at Olinger...
